Byodo-in is a Buddhist temple located in Uji, Kyoto Prefecture, Japan. The temple was originally constructed in 998 AD during the Heian period, but the current buildings were built during the 11th century. The temple is famous for its Phoenix Hall (Hō-ō-dō), a national treasure that is one of the few surviving examples of Heian period architecture.

The Phoenix Hall is a two-story building that features a large statue of Amida Buddha on the first floor, and a smaller statue of the Buddha surrounded by 52 statues of bodhisattvas on the second floor.
