Standing proudly on the Plaza San Martín in the heart of Córdoba, Argentina’s second-largest city, the Cathedral of Córdoba (Catedral de Córdoba or Catedral Nuestra Señora de la Asunción) is one of the country’s most stunning examples of colonial baroque architecture. With its striking stone façade, twin bell towers, and richly decorated interior, this cathedral serves as both a spiritual center and a historical landmark that has witnessed over four centuries of Argentine history.

The cathedral’s origins date back to 1582, just a few years after the founding of Córdoba. Construction began in 1598 under the direction of Jesuit architects and continued for more than a century, blending Spanish colonial, Baroque, and Neoclassical styles as different architects contributed over time. It was finally completed in 1787, making it the oldest continually used church in Argentina.

Throughout its history, the cathedral has been central to Córdoba’s identity as an intellectual and religious hub—especially during the colonial period, when the city was a key center for the Jesuit missions in South America.

Interesting Facts
