Fort Lovrijenac is a fortress located in Dubrovnik, Croatia. It is situated on a cliff above the Adriatic Sea, just outside the western wall of the Old Town of Dubrovnik. The fortress was built in the 11th century and served as a defensive stronghold against attacks from the sea.
Fort Lovrijenac is a two-story building with a rectangular base and four towers at each corner. The walls are up to 12 meters thick in some places, and the fortress was designed to be impregnable from both land and sea. The fort was built with local limestone and features Gothic and Renaissance architectural elements.
One of the most famous events associated with Fort Lovrijenac is the staging of Shakespeare's play "Hamlet" in 1913. The production was performed in the open air of the fort and is regarded as one of the most memorable performances in the history of the play.
Today, Fort Lovrijenac is open to the public and visitors can climb to the top of the fortress for panoramic views of Dubrovnik and the Adriatic Sea. The fort is also used as a venue for cultural events and concerts, particularly during the Dubrovnik Summer Festival.
