Galata Tower is a medieval stone tower located in Istanbul, Turkey. The tower was built in 1348 by the Genoese colony in Constantinople (modern-day Istanbul), and was originally used as a watchtower to help defend the city. The tower was later used as a prison, and then as an observatory.
The tower is nine stories tall and stands 66.9 meters (219 feet) high. It has an external diameter of 16.5 meters (54 feet) at its base, and the walls are 3.75 meters (12 feet) thick. Visitors can climb up to the top of the tower via an elevator or a spiral staircase, and can enjoy panoramic views of the city from the viewing platform.
Today, Galata Tower is a popular tourist attraction in Istanbul, and is visited by millions of people each year. In addition to the stunning views, visitors can also enjoy a restaurant and café on the upper floors of the tower.
