The New Cathedral of Cuenca (Catedral de la Inmaculada Concepción) is the most iconic landmark of Cuenca, Ecuador, and one of the country’s grandest religious buildings. With its monumental scale, three striking blue domes, and ornate façade overlooking Parque Calderón, the cathedral stands as both a spiritual heart and an architectural treasure of this UNESCO World Heritage city.

Construction of the cathedral began in 1885, designed by German architect Johannes Stiehle, to replace the smaller Old Cathedral that could no longer accommodate Cuenca’s growing population. Inspired by Romanesque Revival and Renaissance styles, the New Cathedral took almost a century to complete, finally being consecrated in the 1960s. Though its towers were never finished due to structural concerns, the church still dominates the skyline and has become a symbol of Cuenca.

Interesting Facts
- The cathedral can hold up to 9,000 worshippers, making it one of the largest churches in Latin America.
- Its three domes, covered with sky-blue and white glazed tiles imported from Czechoslovakia, are visible from all over the city.
- The interior features marble floors from Carrara, Italy, stained glass windows from France, and detailed gold-leaf altars.
- Its unfinished bell towers are a curious detail—they were originally planned to be taller but had to be scaled down to prevent collapse.
- The cathedral is still an active parish and the seat of the Archdiocese of Cuenca, hosting major religious events like Holy Week and the Corpus Christi festival.
