On the way to Costa Rica’s Pacific coast, near the entrance to Carara National Park, you’ll find one of the country’s most unusual attractions: the Crocodile Bridge (Puente Río Tárcoles). Spanning the Tárcoles River, this roadside stop has become legendary for the dozens of American crocodiles (Crocodylus acutus) that can be seen basking on the riverbanks or gliding through the murky waters below.

The Tárcoles River has long been home to one of the largest populations of wild crocodiles in Central America. As tourism in Costa Rica grew, the bridge became a natural observation point, offering a safe way to witness these ancient reptiles up close. Today, it’s one of the most photographed spots on the journey between San José and Jacó Beach.
